Lesson 1: The Peace Check
New to this course? Take the pre-test first. About 10 minutes, not graded. It shows your starting point, so at the end you can see how far you came. Take the pre-test
In this lesson you will
- Rate your last month on the twelve Peace Check statements
- Find the law to start with and your growth zone
- Understand why every law comes with a 21 day starter plan, and why 21 days is only the start
Peace is the baseline, not the prize
Most of us lose track of two things in all the noise: our peace and our happiness. Being unbothered does not mean you stop caring. It means discernment: knowing what deserves your attention and what does not. You still feel things. You just stop handing the steering wheel to every person and post that wants it.
The twelve laws are organized in three parts, and each part builds on the one before it.
- The Shield (Laws 1 to 4): protect your peace. Guard your calm, say no without guilt, manage the people who drain you, and treat rest as fuel.
- The Flame (Laws 5 to 8): master yourself under pressure. Choose your response, use silence well, keep your attention in your own lane, and stay steady when the heat is on.
- The Compass (Laws 9 to 12): choose your direction. Stop chasing, build joy on purpose, live by your own values, and define success for yourself.
Shield first, because you cannot build anything in a house with no walls. Flame second, because protection means little if you lose yourself the moment someone lights a match. Compass last, because once you are protected and steady, the question becomes where you are going.
Take the Peace Check
Rate each statement from 1 to 5 based on the last month of your life. 1 means rarely true, 3 means sometimes true, and 5 means almost always true. Grab a pen, or use the notes box at the bottom of this page.
- I start my day on my own terms before the world gets to me.
- I can say no without feeling guilty for hours afterward.
- I limit my time with people who leave me drained.
- I rest without feeling lazy, and I get the sleep I need.
- When someone pushes my buttons, I pause before I answer.
- I am comfortable with silence in a conversation or a quiet room.
- I spend little energy tracking other people's business or progress.
- I stay steady and clear when the pressure is on.
- I do not chase people, approval, or outcomes that are not coming.
- I do at least one thing every day that brings me joy on purpose.
- Scrolling past other people's lives rarely makes me feel behind.
- I know what success means to me, and my week reflects it.

Each statement matches the law with the same number. Any statement you rated 1 or 2 is a law to start with. If you have several, start with the lowest Shield law (1 to 4), because those make every other law easier.
Then add up each part: Shield (statements 1 to 4), Flame (5 to 8), and Compass (9 to 12), each out of 20. A part that scores 10 or lower is your growth zone for the next season. Take the Peace Check again after you finish a 21 day starter plan. Watching the numbers move is part of the reward.
The Peace Check is a reflection tool written for the book. It is not a psychological test or a diagnosis. Prefer to tap instead of write? The free Unbothered Score Quiz works the same way.
A straight word on 21 days
You may have heard it takes 21 days to build a habit. That number is a myth. When researchers at University College London followed people building a new daily habit, the average time for it to feel automatic was about 66 days, with a range from 18 to 254 days (Lally and colleagues, 2010). They also found that missing a single day did not ruin the process.
So every 21 day starter plan in this course is exactly that: a starter. Three weeks is long enough to learn a law, test it in your real life, and feel the difference. The last module shows you how to carry it from day 21 to day 66.
How every lesson works
Each law lesson follows the same pattern: the law in one line, why it matters, the law in action, what the research says (including its limits), one tool you can use the same day, the most common trap, your 21 day starter plan, and a worksheet.
Key takeaways
- Unbothered means discernment, not coldness
- Start with your lowest score, and with the Shield if you have several
- 21 days starts a habit; about 66 days on average makes it feel automatic
Exercise: Find your starting law
- Score all twelve statements honestly, based on the last month
- Circle every statement you rated 1 or 2
- Add up your Shield, Flame, and Compass totals
- Write down the one law you will start with and put a date on your calendar to retake the Peace Check in 21 days
