Getting Started with BMU
Everything you need before your first lesson. It takes about 3 minutes to read.
How BMU works
BMU Learning (BMU) is an online learning community with short, practical courses for adults. Today, 13 courses are free for everyone, with no card and no account. The other 21 are part of BMU All Access, $9.99 a month for unlimited access to the course catalog. Sign up free as a Founding Member. The public launch is Nov 9, 2026. Each All Access course has a free preview lesson you can read now.
Most courses follow the same path:
- Pretest. A short check of what you already know. It is not graded.
- Lessons. Read each lesson, try the self check, do the exercise, and mark the lesson complete to earn its badge.
- Wrap up. Pull together what you learned.
- Posttest. Show what you learned. You can retake it.
- Project. In courses that have a course project, build it in the project builder. The site checks each part and tells you what to fix, and you can try again as many times as you need.
- Certificate. Pass the Posttest with a score of 80% or higher, then print your Certificate of Completion. In courses that have a course project: Pass the Posttest with a score of 80% or higher and complete the course project, which the site checks for you.
How to find your way around
- Course Catalog: the full list of courses by department, with the free courses first. Open a course to see its syllabus and your progress. Many courses also have their own Getting started page and a glossary of key words, linked near the top of the course page.
- Lesson pages: the bar at the top shows how far along you are. At the bottom, use Mark complete, then Previous lesson or Next lesson.
- My Classes: your courses, badges and certificates in one place.
- On a phone: tap Menu at the top of the page to see the main links.
What you need
- A phone, tablet or computer with an internet connection.
- A current web browser, such as Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox, with JavaScript turned on.
- Audio is optional. Lessons are written to be read. When a lesson has audio, it comes with a transcript. When it has video, it comes with captions.
- Private or incognito browsing does not keep your progress, so use a regular browser window.
Your progress
There is no login. Progress is saved on this device and browser only. To keep a copy, or to move to another phone, computer or browser, use Save my progress, then Restore progress on the other device. You will find both buttons in My Classes and at the end of each lesson. Your saved file stays with you. It is not sent to BMU.
How help works
There is no live instructor. BMU courses are self paced, with no class meetings, so you can learn on your own schedule. If you get stuck, help is a message away:
- At the end of each lesson, choose Ask BMU Learner Support. The support form opens with your course and lesson already filled in.
- The Help Center answers common questions about courses, progress and certificates.
- We read every message and reply as soon as we can.
Audio narration
Some lessons may include audio narration. Narration uses an AI voice, not a human recording. The full written lesson is always on the page.
Certificates
To earn a Certificate of Completion, pass the course's Posttest with a score of 80% or higher. Then type your name and print or save your certificate. Your pass is saved in this browser, so keep a printed or saved copy.
For courses that have a course project: Pass the Posttest with a score of 80% or higher and complete the course project, which the site checks for you. Your project is saved in this browser too, and you can download or print it.
BMU is a learning community, not an accredited college. Courses and certificates do not award academic credit.
Progress is saved on this device and browser only. To save a copy or move it to another device, turn on JavaScript and use Save my progress.
