Debt-Free Degree Plan Checklist
A printable checklist and one page plan from the Back to School Game Plan course. Confirm current benefit rules with official sources before deciding.
Step 1: Define the target
- I named a specific role, not just a field
- I read at least five current job postings for it
- I checked the role in the Occupational Outlook Handbook (bls.gov/ooh)
- I know the minimum credential the role requires
Step 2: Count what I have
- I requested transcripts from every college I attended
- I downloaded my JST, plus my CCAF transcript if I was enlisted Air Force or Space Force
- I listed subjects for possible CLEP or DSST exams
- I listed certifications or licenses that might count
Step 3: Choose my path
- I compared at least three schools, including a community college
- I checked each school's accreditation myself
- I got credit evaluations in writing
- I know the total cost to finish, not just cost per credit
- I know whether I can study online or part time if I move
Step 4: Fund it in the right order
- I checked use it or lose it money first (such as Tuition Assistance, if eligible)
- I filed the FAFSA at studentaid.gov
- I searched state grants, state veteran benefits, and scholarships
- I asked my employer about tuition help
- I decided when to use GI Bill benefits, if I have them (va.gov)
- I will borrow only federal loans, and only what I truly need
